Chinese nationals win Fields Medal for first time as AI models ace math Olympiad
The Fields Medal, known as the Nobel Prize of mathematics, was awarded to four mathematicians on Thursday, including two Chinese nationals, one American, and one Canadian.
The International Mathematical Union awarded the prestigious Fields Medal to four mathematicians on Thursday. The recipients are Hong Wang and Yu Deng from China, John Pardon from the United States, and Jacob Tsimerman from Canada. This marks the first time that Chinese nationals have won the Fields Medal.
Hong Wang, a 35-year-old mathematician who teaches in France and the United States at New York University, is only the third woman to receive the honor since its inception in 1936. She follows in the footsteps of Maryam Mirzakhani of Iran, who won the prize in 2014, and Ukrainian mathematician Maryna Viazovska, who won it in 2022. Wang is being honored for her work that led to a solution to a mathematical puzzle that had stumped experts for more than a century. The conjecture was originally posed by Japanese mathematician Soichi Kakeya in 1917.
Meanwhile, artificial intelligence has made significant strides in the field of mathematics. For the first time, AI models from two Chinese tech companies, Huawei and Xiaohongshu, achieved perfect scores on the questions given to human contestants at this month's International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The AI models, Celia from Huawei and dots-note-3.0 from Xiaohongshu, demonstrated comprehensive problem-solving capabilities across several mathematical fields.
The IMO, held in Shanghai this year, saw 666 contestants from different countries, with only seven achieving full marks. The AI models were provided with the IMO problems after human contestants had taken the exam, with their submissions required within a specified time limit. During testing, any form of human intervention was strictly prohibited, and the AI solutions were submitted to IMO organizers for grading.
AI's progress has been rapid. At the 2024 IMO, Google achieved a silver-medal score, solving four of the six problems over two to three days. This year, four cutting-edge AI models from leading U.S. labs OpenAI and Anthropic, the startup Axiom Math, and China's Moonshot AI all scored perfect marks on the IMO questions.
The Fields Medal, which includes a prize of 15,000 Canadian dollars (US$17,000) and a gold medallion bearing the likeness of Archimedes, is awarded every four years to recognize outstanding discoveries by researchers under the age of 40.
