Wildfires scorched parts of Europe on Wednesday as authorities in Cyprus and Greece reported containment efforts amid heightened alerts.
In Cyprus, a wildfire in the Ayia Anna area of Larnaca broke out around 3 p.m. in the bed of the Tremithos river and was brought under full control by 5:30 p.m., the Forest Department said. The blaze burned approximately six hectares of vegetation, including reeds, wild grass and cane stubble. Response efforts involved five firefighting aircraft, 33 Forest Department personnel with six fire engines, two water tankers and a bulldozer, as well as nine Fire Service personnel with three fire engines. Additional support came from a water tanker and bulldozer provided by the Larnaca District Administration, along with local residents using an agricultural tractor and an excavator. Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis confirmed the fire occurred in the Kalo Chorio area, which falls under the Forest Department’s operational responsibility, and clarified it was not linked to the Kalo Chorio firing range .
Greece’s Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection placed the Ionian Islands under a Code Red wildfire alert, citing a very high risk of wildfires. The National Civil Protection Mechanism was fully activated to deploy personnel, equipment and resources for emergency response and short-term recovery. A high wildfire risk was also forecast for Attica, several mainland areas and all of the country’s islands. Meanwhile, firefighters contained a blaze in a quarry in the Elliniko area of Salamina, which posed no further spread risk. Another wildfire in the Agios Vlasios area of Viotia was largely under control, with crews addressing remaining hot spots. A forest fire in Stefani, Viotia, no longer had an active front, though firefighters continued monitoring flare-ups .
In Spain, the annual La Tomatina festival in Buñol drew around 22,000 participants, who hurled 150,000 kilograms of tomatoes—30,000 kilograms more than last year’s 120,000—during the event. Seven trucks distributed the tomatoes, with six departing from San Luis and one directed to the plaza de la Diputación. Four people received on-site medical attention after an unidentified individual sprayed pepper gas, affecting their eyes; all were treated and released. The incident mirrored a similar occurrence last year, when 10 people were affected, though only three required treatment for eye and facial injuries .
Elsewhere in Spain, a wildfire near Barcelona’s Collserola range burned 54.5 hectares of forest and bushland before being stabilized by midday. Authorities intervened at the fire’s origin point, seizing a lighter and a cigarette butt .
