Italy’s Flavio Cobolli and Jasmine Paolini powered their way into Wimbledon quarter-finals on Monday, delivering a historic day for Italian tennis as both players advanced to the last eight of the grass-court major.
Cobolli, the world No 10, produced a disciplined three-set victory over fifth seed Alex de Minaur to reach the quarter-finals for the second successive year. The Italian claimed the first set 7-5, survived a tense second-set tie-break 7-6(4), and sealed the win 6-3 in two hours 34 minutes on Court One. “I felt tired, I’m happy to have won in three sets because it’s really hot,” Cobolli said after the match. “There’s a lot of respect between us, I like him as a person and as a player, even if I don’t like playing against him.” With a grin he added: “Now we need to find a house—someone has a spare room to lend?”
Paolini, the 17th seed, followed hours later by overcoming Alexandra Eala 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Centre Court in front of a star-studded crowd that included Roger Federer. The 30-year-old Italian, who reached the Wimbledon final in 2024, now faces 12th seed Marta Kostyuk after the Ukrainian defeated Ashlyn Krueger. “It was really tough, a rollercoaster,” Paolini said. “2026 proved a lot to me. There were tough moments but I kept working. Every day I’m feeling better, I feel in the right way when I compete on court again. I love what I do but I have to enjoy it—it’s my superpower.”
Cobolli’s run continues a remarkable Grand Slam surge: he reached the French Open final in June and now stands one win away from equalling his best Wimbledon result. His quarter-final opponent will be decided later on Monday when Grigor Dimitrov faces British wildcard Arthur Fery. The Bulgarian, a former Wimbledon semi-finalist, holds a 3-0 head-to-head advantage over the 21-year-old Briton.
Paolini’s victory ended Eala’s historic run; the 21-year-old Filipino became the first player from the Philippines to reach the fourth round of a major in the Open era when she beat defending champion Iga Świątek on Saturday.
Both Italians now join a quarter-final line-up that includes top seed Novak Djokovic, second seed Alexander Zverev, and fourth seed Coco Gauff. The All England Club will complete the last-eight draw on Monday evening, with play scheduled to resume on Tuesday.
