French President Emmanuel Macron hosted Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Paris for a two-day state visit, beginning Sunday with their joint appearance at the closing ceremony of the Esports World Cup at the Grand Palais. The event, held outside Saudi Arabia for the first time, featured competitions spanning video games to chess and drew high-profile attendees, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino .
On Monday, the leaders are set to sign agreements on health, transport and energy, according to a French presidential official. Bilateral talks will address regional issues, including Iran, Gaza-Israel, Lebanon and Syria, as well as energy routes to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, such as new pipelines and alternative port networks .
The visit marks the inaugural meeting of the Saudi-French Strategic Partnership Council, established during Macron’s state visit to Riyadh in December 2024. The council, co-chaired by Macron and the crown prince, aims to structure political, economic, security and cultural cooperation between the two nations .
[Prince Mohammed’s](en.wikipedia.org) trip to France is his first outside Saudi Arabia since signing the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement with Turkiye and Pakistan on Aug. 7. The pact commits the three nations to treat an armed attack on any one as an attack on all, reflecting Riyadh’s push to diversify security partnerships beyond Washington .
The crown prince’s itinerary includes an official reception hosted by Macron and ceremonial events, alongside discussions on economic and strategic issues. The Elysee Palace stated the visit underscores the shared ambition to use sports and culture as tools to strengthen bilateral ties .
Prince Mohammed has previously stayed at Château Louis XIV in Louveciennes, near Paris, which he purchased in 2015 for €275 million .
