Ukraine formally warned airlines and international aviation authorities on Wednesday that Russian airspace is unsafe for civilian traffic, as Kyiv escalated long-range drone strikes deep inside Russia.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced that Ukraine had officially notified the International Civil Aviation Organization that Russian airspace posed risks due to heightened military activity. “Ukraine has officially notified ICAO that the Russian airspace is not safe for civilian aviation because of increased military activity. We urge everyone to avoid it,” Sybiha wrote on X .
The warning followed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s statement on Tuesday that Russian skies were “becoming completely dangerous” as Ukraine expanded drone operations. “There will simply be drones in Russia’s skies on a scale that has to be taken into account,” Zelenskyy said, adding that Ukraine does not target civilian aviation but that the risks could no longer be ignored . Russian President Vladimir Putin called Zelenskyy’s remarks “a declaration of state terrorism” .
Disruptions to flights using Russian airspace began within hours. Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines canceled 12 flights to and from Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport overnight, and a Pegasus flight from Antalya to Moscow was diverted due to security concerns, according to Turkish media reports. Turkish Airlines canceled two departures and two arrivals between Istanbul and Moscow .
The warnings came as Russia continued its own drone and missile strikes on Kyiv. On Wednesday morning, Russian drones hit central Kyiv, wounding 11 people and damaging residential and university buildings, marking the seventh consecutive day of near-daily attacks on the capital .
