Five wounded in shooting near Virginia State University dormitories; multiple suspects sought
Five people were wounded in a shooting near Virginia State University’s Quad Annexes early Saturday, with one victim in critical condition, according to a university statement. The incident occurred around 1:29 a.m. outside campus dormitories in the 3300 block of Boisseau Street in Ettrick, about 24 miles south of Richmond, Virginia .
Chesterfield County Police and Virginia State University Police are leading the investigation, assisted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. The university confirmed “multiple suspects” were involved but provided no further details on motives or arrests .
A campus-wide lockdown was imposed after the shooting and lifted at 8:21 a.m., though authorities maintained a “significant law enforcement presence” as the probe continued. The university urged the campus community to avoid the area and follow police instructions .
All five victims were transported to hospitals. Four sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while one remained in critical condition, according to Chesterfield County Police and university officials .
The shooting occurred two days before the start of the fall semester, with classes scheduled to begin Monday. Virginia State University, a historically Black public university founded in 1882, enrolls approximately 5,700 students and was the first fully state-supported four-year college for Black Americans .
Authorities have not released additional details on the suspects or the circumstances leading to the shooting. The university and police requested anyone with information to contact Chesterfield County Police .
