Poland extended temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania until March 30, 2027, according to a regulation published in the Journal of Laws on Friday. The Ministry of Interior and Administration justified the decision by citing persistent threats of illegal migration from both eastern routes via the Baltic states and from Germany, where a large number of foreigners with unresolved residency status pose risks of secondary migratory movements.
Controls will be conducted at 50 locations along the Polish-German border and 13 along the Polish-Lithuanian border. The ministry also adjusted the territorial scope of 13 border crossings with Lithuania and 11 with Germany, including the Rosówek-Rosow road crossing, where a nearby bike path was added to the controlled area.
Poland first reintroduced temporary border checks with Germany and Lithuania on July 7, 2025. Since then, authorities have extended the measures multiple times, most recently from April 5 to Oct. 1, 2026. During this period, over 4.5 million people and nearly 2.3 million vehicles were inspected. Nearly 1,300 individuals were denied entry at the Lithuanian border, while nearly 1,200 were turned away at the German border. Over 118,000 personnel, including nearly 41,000 Border Guard officers, over 6,000 police, and nearly 69,000 soldiers, were involved in the Lithuanian border controls. For the German border, nearly 211,000 personnel were deployed, including over 88,000 Border Guard officers, over 57,000 police, and nearly 64,000 soldiers. More than 130 people were detained for aiding illegal border crossings.
