The Trump administration has suspended global processing of immigrant visa applications to conduct “in-depth training” for consular staff, the Financial Times reported on Aug. 26. A State Department spokesperson told the newspaper that the agency launched a “global training initiative” this month to ensure consular officers are “fully prepared to conduct a thorough and consistent assessment of every applicant.”

The training aims to screen out applicants who “are highly likely to become a public charge” or rely on U.S. welfare programs, the spokesperson said. Applicants with scheduled interviews at U.S. embassies and consulates received notices that their appointments were postponed, with new dates to be announced later. The State Department did not specify when interviews would resume.

The move follows a federal court ruling in New York earlier in August that struck down a previous State Department policy halting immigrant visa processing for citizens of 75 countries, including Russia. That policy had directed consular officers to deny visas to applicants deemed likely to seek public benefits. The court deemed the measure unlawful and ordered its reversal.

The administration has also proposed a $103,265 fee for employers using the H-1B visa program for skilled foreign workers, according to a federal register notice cited by La Libre. The proposal, open for public comment until Sept. 24, would generate an estimated $8.78 billion in annual revenue, with funds allocated to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, immigration courts, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security is pursuing the measure through standard regulatory procedure after a federal judge in June blocked a similar $100,000 fee for lacking congressional approval.

Additionally, the administration plans to revoke over 200,000 B1 and B2 tourist and business visas issued between 2016 and 2026 to foreigners who have applied for or are seeking asylum in the U.S., Il Fatto Quotidiano reported. The State Department is expected to announce the revocations in the coming weeks.

A State Department spokesperson told The Hill that ensuring a “more prosperous America” requires guarantees that visa applicants will not become a “public charge” or depend on U.S. social benefits reserved for eligible citizens in need. The administration has previously tightened immigration policies, including ending most refugee resettlement programs and imposing new limits on visas and green cards.
