A trailer carrying 19 tons of asphalt overturned on Norway’s E39 highway near Mandal in Agder early Thursday, spilling its load and forcing a full closure of the road in both directions, authorities said.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration first reported the incident at 5:03 a.m. local time. The asphalt hardened into piles on the roadway, complicating cleanup efforts. Operations leader Tone Lise Erikstad of the Agder police district told NRK that the material’s solidification would delay reopening, with the eastbound lane potentially clearing sooner than the westbound side. Detours were directed via County Road 439 .
Driver Axel Dahl, who operated the truck, told NRK he did not know what caused the trailer to tip but called himself “lucky” that no one was injured. “It was a roller coaster and not fun,” Dahl said. The accident damaged a guardrail, but no personal injuries were reported .
In Sweden, the E4 highway between Skarvberget and the Hagsta interchange in Gävleborg County was also fully closed in both directions following a truck accident, the Swedish Transport Administration announced. Traffic was rerouted via Road 583 between Gävle and Hagsta, with an initial estimate for partial reopening set for 8 a.m. .
Meanwhile, in Germany, the A38 highway near Roßla was shut down in the direction of Leipzig after a multi-vehicle collision. Police reported three injuries, some severe, and said one lane was being cleared to restore limited traffic flow .
In Berlin, a crash involving six cars on Autobahn 111 in the Tegel district left five people injured, including two seriously. A rescue helicopter landed at the scene, according to local reports .
Separately, a person was struck by a truck on Sweden’s Route 44 in Lidköping early Thursday. Emergency services responded to the incident, which was reported at 2:13 a.m., but the extent of injuries remained unclear .
