Two explosive drones launched from Iranian territory struck the office of Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the region’s security council chief in Erbil early on Monday, according to Kurdish authorities.
The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Service said in a statement that two Hadid-110 drones were fired from the Iranian side of the border at 12:28 a.m. local time, targeting Barzani’s private office and the home of the Security and Intelligence Agency director in the Pirmam district of Erbil province. No casualties were reported .
Barzani confirmed the attack in a post on X, stating that an investigation by the region’s counter-terrorism unit determined his personal office and the intelligence chief’s residence were the targets. He condemned the strikes as “reckless and unacceptable” and a “dangerous escalation” threatening the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region. Barzani added that the attacks would not deter the government from its duties or its commitment to protecting citizens .
The strike follows months of repeated drone and missile attacks on the Kurdistan Region, which local authorities say have exceeded 1,000 since the start of the Middle East war on Feb. 28. Previous attacks have targeted U.S. facilities, Iranian-Kurdish opposition groups, and civilian areas, but Monday’s incident marked a direct strike on the region’s leadership .
A U.S. government inspector-general report covering January to March 2026 documented attacks by Iran and Iran-aligned militias on the U.S. base at Erbil Airfield, as well as on Kurdish government and security facilities. In late March, drones targeted the residences of Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and former president Masoud Barzani .
Iran has not commented on the latest attack. The Kurdistan Region, autonomous since 1991, maintains close ties with the U.S. and Western nations while adopting a cautious stance toward Iran. Kurdish authorities deny allowing their territory to be used to threaten neighboring countries .
