Measles cases linked to Swedish festival rise as health authorities trace contacts across regions

Swedish health authorities confirmed 24 measles cases linked to the Urkult festival, with three additional infections reported on Aug. 20, according to the Public Health Agency of Sweden. Most of those infected are unvaccinated, and cases have been identified across multiple regions, including Västra Götaland, where a high school student in Gothenburg attended classes this week. The school, with 1,100 students, remains open while contact tracing continues.

In Cyprus, a 70-year-old man was hospitalized in intensive care with West Nile virus, the island’s first case of 2026, health officials announced. The patient developed a serious central nervous system infection, a rare but severe outcome typically affecting elderly or immunocompromised individuals. Authorities have intensified mosquito control measures, including targeted spraying in areas where the patient may have been exposed. Elisavet Konstantinou, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Health, stated that cases remain sporadic and do not currently warrant public alarm, though the virus has been monitored since 2016, with 24 cases recorded in 2019 and nine in 2023 .
Meanwhile, the UK Health Security Agency declared a national salmonella outbreak, with 207 confirmed cases—199 in England, six in Scotland, one in Wales, and one in Northern Ireland—and one death. Investigations suggest imported eggs or egg-containing dishes as the likely source, with genetic sequencing linking cases to a common origin. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland reported no confirmed cases or contaminated egg distribution in Ireland but is monitoring the situation .
In Austria, Legionnaires’ disease has claimed three lives in the Linz area, with the total number of cases rising to 26 since the outbreak began on July 20. Authorities have yet to identify the definitive source despite ongoing investigations .
Italy reported a diphtheria-related death in Palermo, where a 4-year-old unvaccinated child succumbed to a severe infection. The bacterium *Corynebacterium diphtheriae* remains rare in Italy due to vaccination, but health officials warn of persistent circulation in other countries, with cases occasionally imported through travel .
