Denmark guarantees 18- to 24-year-olds mental health treatment within 30 days of referral

Denmark’s regions began implementing a new patient right on Thursday that guarantees 18- to 24-year-olds with mild to moderate anxiety or depression access to mental health treatment within 30 days of a doctor’s referral.
The measure, passed by the Folketing in December 2025 as part of a 10-year psychiatric care plan, replaces a system where waiting times varied widely. “Some had to wait half a year to be seen, while others could be seen the next day,” said Jane Alrø Sørensen, secretary general of Bedre Psykiatri, a Danish association for people affected by mental illness. “By introducing it as a patient right, everyone is guaranteed help within 30 days.”
Regions can provide treatment through their own facilities or private providers under contract. Options include individual psychologist sessions, group programs or online courses. Sørensen said the variety of treatments could better address individual needs. Bedre Psykiatri plans to monitor compliance with the 30-day deadline and whether treatment quality matches the previous system.
Region Østdanmark has estimated around 9,500 young people in its area will be referred annually under the new framework .
