China builds 600-hectare artificial island in South China Sea: South Korea counters with Arctic shipping push
Satellite images reveal China has transformed the Antelope Reef in the South China Sea into a nearly 600-hectare artificial island within a year, according to a report published on Aug. 25 . The site, located in the strategically significant Paracel Islands, now features a deep-water port and preparations for a military airstrip and hangars.
The rapid construction expands China’s military and intelligence presence in the region, reinforcing its territorial claims and control over disputed maritime routes. A year ago, the reef barely emerged above the waterline, but recent images show a 6-kilometer-long artificial island equipped with infrastructure capable of supporting naval vessels.
Meanwhile, South Korea is challenging China’s dominance in Arctic shipping routes to Europe, as reported by the Financial Times on Aug. 26 . The move signals Seoul’s push to diversify trade corridors amid geopolitical tensions.
