Fernandez, a £125 million arrival from Chelsea, replaced the injured Nico O’Reilly in the warm-up and contributed to the opener, setting up Semenyo’s assist for Haaland.
City’s defense, anchored by Gianluigi Donnarumma, faced early pressure as Coventry nearly capitalized on a miscontrolled backpass, with the Italian goalkeeper clearing off his own line. Donnarumma later produced two crucial late saves to deny Loum Tchaouna and Ellis Simms, preserving the clean sheet. Coventry, winless and goalless in their first three top-flight matches since promotion, came closest to breaking their duck but fell short.
Maresca acknowledged the team’s room for improvement, stating, “It’s an important win, different from the first two. I’m very happy. I know the players day-by-day, we know each other. It means we will get better and better.” City’s next test comes against Manchester United in the local derby next weekend.
