British Olympian Gemma Stevens wins Burghley Horse Trials after 31 attempts at five-star level
Gemma Stevens won the Burghley Horse Trials in England on Sunday, securing her first five-star victory after 31 attempts at the highest level of eventing. The 41-year-old British Olympian, riding Chilli Knight, delivered a faultless showjumping round to finish on her dressage score of 29.6, the only rider in the field to achieve this. She was followed by compatriot Katie Magee on Treworra in second place, with the USA’s Caroline Pamukcu and HSH Blake taking third.
Stevens, who first competed at five-star level in 2007, called the win the biggest of her career. “It’s only taken me 25 years and finally I’ve managed to win a big B [Burghley or Badminton]. I couldn’t be more proud,” she said. She also noted her long history with Chilli Knight, having known the horse since his birth and previously ridden his mother, King’s Gem. “It’s unbelievable... this honestly means the absolute world,” Stevens added.
The victory marked redemption after her disappointment at the World Championships in Aachen, Germany, last month, where she failed to complete the cross-country event for the British team. “Aachen was really tough, but that’s sport. You’ve got to just bounce back and get on with it,” she said. Stevens and Chilli Knight had previously won the replacement five-star event at Bicton in 2021 after COVID-19 canceled Burghley that year .
