Antonelli tops Belgian Grand Prix qualifying as Hamilton recovers from crash

Kimi Antonelli, the Mercedes driver and championship leader, dominated the third free practice session at the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday. Antonelli set the fastest time of 1:45.990, confirming his strong performance on the circuit after also recording the best time in the second free practice session. Lando Norris of McLaren was second, followed by Max Verstappen of Red Bull.
However, the session was marked by a significant incident involving Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion, driving for Ferrari, crashed in the final minutes of the session at the same spot where Pierre Gasly had crashed the day before. The impact caused substantial damage to the rear of Hamilton's car, including the rear wing and the right rear tire. There were concerns about whether the car could be repaired in time for the qualifying session, but Ferrari managed to fix the damage, and Hamilton was able to participate in the qualifications.
In the qualifying sessions, Lando Norris of McLaren secured the provisional pole position after the first attempt in Q3. Kimi Antonelli was second, followed by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari. Max Verstappen, who had been competitive throughout the sessions, finished sixth in Q3.
The qualifying session was not without its drama. Nico Hülkenberg of Audi was eliminated in Q2 after experiencing hydraulic issues, causing a slight delay in the start of Q3. Despite this, Antonelli continued to show his form, topping the timesheets in Q2 and securing a strong position for the race.
Antonelli currently leads the championship with a 25-point advantage over his Mercedes teammate George Russell. Hamilton is third, a further seven points behind. Verstappen, who is seventh in the championship, is 103 points behind Antonelli.
The Belgian Grand Prix promises to be an exciting race, with Antonelli looking to maintain his championship lead and Ferrari hoping to recover from the setback of Hamilton's crash.
