Italy extends Schengen border checks with Spain for 15 days over Ceuta migration pressures

Italy extended its temporary suspension of Schengen border-free travel rules with Spain for another 15 days, the Interior Ministry announced on Thursday. The decision maintains border checks for travelers arriving by air or sea from Spain, according to Reuters .
The move follows repeated extensions of the controls, initially introduced in August in response to a migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi approved the latest extension after consulting with the Committee for Immigration and Border Security Analysis, the Italian news agency Ansa reported .
The ministry cited persistent migration pressures in Ceuta as the basis for the decision. The notification was formally communicated to the European Commission and the interior ministers of other EU member states, Ansa added. Spain had previously criticized Italy’s initial border controls and reciprocated with its own checks on Italian travelers.
