Klopp defends Germany rebuild after Nations League struggles ahead of Serbia match

Jürgen Klopp has urged patience as Germany’s new national team coach after a winless start in the Nations League, defending his players amid criticism of their early performances. Speaking ahead of Thursday’s match against Serbia in Munich, Klopp dismissed suggestions that midfielders Joshua Kimmich and Felix Nmecha had underperformed in the opening 0-1 loss to Greece, emphasizing that his tactical system requires time to gel.
“If you put together a ballet and after four days they’re supposed to perform, they’ll run into each other. We didn’t do that,” Klopp said, rejecting blame for the duo’s struggles in his 4-3-3 setup, where Kimmich plays a deeper role and Nmecha operates ahead of him. He warned against rushing to judge players during the rebuilding phase following Germany’s World Cup disappointment, stating that “in 25 years of football, no double pivot has ever worked after five days.”
Former national team midfielder İlkay Gündoğan, now at Galatasaray, offered support for Klopp’s approach, recalling the coach’s intense but authentic leadership style from their time at Borussia Dortmund. “No coach is as authentic as he is,” Gündoğan said, urging fans to allow Klopp time to test his squad, which has already featured over 40 players. “He took over Liverpool and Dortmund when they were at rock bottom and led them to titles. It will be a tough road for the players, as seen in the first two games,” Gündoğan added.
Klopp himself acknowledged the scrutiny but insisted the process cannot be accelerated, noting that certain fundamentals must be internalized by players “in the foreseeable future” for long-term success. The match against Serbia marks Germany’s third under Klopp’s leadership, with the coach stressing that public interest does not change the timeline for progress.
