Michael Kiwanuka delays fifth album Fudge to October after stroke and emergency surgery
Michael Kiwanuka will release his fifth album, *Fudge*, in October, more than a year after its originally planned autumn 2025 launch. The delay followed a haemorrhagic stroke the British singer-songwriter suffered at 38, which required emergency surgery and months in intensive care.
Kiwanuka revealed the health crisis this week in a brief social media post, his first public update since canceling all performances last summer, including the All Together Now festival in Ireland and North American dates. His team told the Guardian he spent five additional months in hospital before moving to a Hampshire rehabilitation center, where he remains. He has not returned home since the stroke and described his recovery as uncertain.
The album’s release follows his 2024 critically acclaimed *Small Changes*, which was kept from the UK No. 1 slot only by Kendrick Lamar’s *GNX*. Kiwanuka, known for his genre-blending mix of psychedelic rock, soul, and gospel, granted one interview about *Fudge*, citing its potential as his final record for the foreseeable future. He spoke in two 30-minute calls from the rehabilitation center, accompanied by his wife, Christian singer Charlotte Kiwanuka. His speech remains slow and fragmented, and he declined to discuss traumatic details of the stroke.
Fans, including Alicia Keys, Cat Power, Olivia Dean, and Alabama Shakes, have publicly supported Kiwanuka since his health update .
