The G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains delivered an unexpected show of transatlantic unity on Wednesday, as leaders agreed to expand military support for Ukraine and tighten sanctions on Russia, with US President Donald Trump reversing his previous stance to sign a joint communiqué signaling renewed commitment to Kyiv.

French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the meeting as a “moment of strategic awakening,” noting that Trump’s participation marked a sharp departure from last year’s summit, when the US leader walked out early and blocked joint decisions . The leaders pledged “unwavering support” for Ukraine, committing to accelerate deliveries of air defence systems and long-range weapons, while exploring licensing arrangements to allow Ukraine to produce interceptor missiles domestically . German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the summit’s outcome as a “very clear message” to Moscow, emphasizing the G7’s united front .

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the agreements, stating that the summit secured additional air defence support, increased pressure on Russia, and new commitments to bolster Ukraine’s energy resilience . Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau noted a shift in Washington’s position, calling it “more realistic” and aligned with broader G7 consensus .

However, analysts cautioned that the unity may be fragile. Laura von Daniels of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) described the outcome as a “positive signal” but warned that the long-term durability of the agreements remains uncertain . Macron’s reported strategy of trading French support for the US-Iran nuclear deal in exchange for stronger US backing on Ukraine added another layer of complexity, with Trump insisting on concessions from European allies .

The summit also addressed broader geopolitical tensions, with the G7 reaffirming calls for freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, though Trump’s remarks on potential strikes against Iran introduced fresh uncertainty . As the Évian meeting concluded, the leaders left with a fragile but tangible consensus—one that could reshape the trajectory of the war in Ukraine, provided the commitments withstand the test of time.

Debate: G7 members back on the same page? The leaders of the G7 countries have agreed on tougher sanctions against Russia and new arms deliveries to Ukraine. The summits host, French President Emmanuel Macron, described the meeting in Évian as a "moment of strategic awakening", bearing in mind that US President Donald Trump left the summit early last year, thus blocking any joint decisions. Opinion: The future of the China-US-Russia triangle after Pelosis visit to Taiwan Since February 24, 2022, the international communitys focus was concentrated entirely on the war in Ukraine and the growing Russia – West confrontation. It seemed that nothing could change the situation until the end of hostilities in Ukraine. However, on August 2 and 3, almost everyones attention shifted from Ukraine to Taiwan. As the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, stated her intention to visit Taiwan, up to half a million people were watching the trajectory of her plane on air flight tracking sites. The negative reaction of China, including the warning of President Xi during his conversation with President Biden that those who played with fire would be perished by it, created hype around this visit. Many were discussing the possibility of Chinese military jets closing the airspace over Taiwan and preventing Pelosis plane from landing in Taiwan, while some enthusiasts were even contemplating the possibility of a US-China direct military clash. As Pelosi landed in Taiwan and met with the Taiwanese President, the global social media was full of amateur assessments about the strategic victory of the US and the confirmation of the US global hegemony. However, as the dust settles down, and information noise and manipulation eventually decreases, a more serious assessment is needed to understand the real consequences of this visit.

By working with our allies and partners within multilateral initiatives, we can address Ukraines urgent needs and strengthen its defense capabilities. Together, we aim to promote security and stability in the region by 2026, the minister emphasized.Earlier, Germany provided Ukraines Armed Forces with two Patriot air defense systems and the ninth Iris-T air defense complex.
