Sweden’s women’s volleyball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the European Championship on Monday after defeating host nation Czech Republic 3-0 in Brno. The match ended with set scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-21, securing Sweden’s place in the next round .
Isabelle Haak led Sweden with 31 points, dominating the match despite strong home support for the Czech team. Swedish setter Vilma Julevik contributed with precise serves and consistent passes to Haak and Hanna Hellvig, helping Sweden maintain control. Haak later stated, “It feels good that we are so stable. We have grown a lot from playing so much these past days” .
Sweden will face reigning world champion Italy in the quarterfinals on Wednesday in Brno. Italy, also the Olympic gold medalist, previously defeated Bulgaria 3-0 earlier in the tournament. Sweden lost to Italy 0-3 in the group stage, and Haak commented, “They are the ones with the pressure, so everything is on them” .
The Czech team, which had reached the quarterfinals in 2023, failed to win a single set against Sweden, ending its campaign in the round of 16 .
