Apple briefly removed Telegram from its App Store on Monday, citing content that violated guidelines against child sexual abuse material, according to multiple reports. The messaging app was restored the same day after Telegram removed the prohibited content and banned the user responsible, Apple confirmed .
Telegram acknowledged the suspension in a statement, saying the app had been restored and would soon be available again for all users . Reuters also reported the restoration, referencing Telegram’s confirmation .
The temporary removal follows a pattern of scrutiny for Telegram. In 2024, founder Pavel Durov was arrested in France over allegations that the platform failed to adequately combat criminal misuse, according to German news agency dpa. Australian authorities have also initiated proceedings against Telegram for allegedly failing to detect and remove extremist content, dpa reported .
Telegram has played a significant role in the Ukraine conflict, with both sides using the platform to share updates on the war, dpa noted. In Russia, where Telegram is officially blocked, Durov was added to a terrorist list last week amid claims that the app was being used by Ukrainian intelligence to contact Russians. Users in Russia can still access Telegram via encrypted VPN connections, which obscure their location .
The suspension and restoration were global, affecting iOS, iPadOS, and macOS devices. Russian media outlet Meduza cited reports from Bloomberg, Reuters, and 9to5Mac confirming the removal was due to content involving sexualized violence against children .
