ICE agent charged with lying under oath over Minnesota shooting of Venezuelan immigrant

El tiroteo se produjo durante esa campaña de terror ordenada por el presidente Donald Trump, en la que otros oficiales antiinmigración asesinaron a tiros a dos ciudadanos estadounidenses: Renne Good y Alex Pretti. En ambos casos, la Casa Blanca salió en tromba a defender a los agentes alegando que actuaron en defensa propia, a pesar de que las imágenes grabadas por los testigos mostraban una realidad diferente. Los cargos presentados contra el agente, que responde al nombre de Christina Castro, constituyen un caso singular dentro de las investigaciones y procesos abiertos en Minnesota en relación con las macroredadas. En primer lugar, porque las pruebas sobre las que el jurado ha decidido imputar al agente fueron proporcionadas por el Departamento de Justicia del Gobierno de Trump. La acusación contra Castro se presentó bajo secreto de sumario. Según la Fiscalía, Castro disparó e hirió a Julio C. Sosa-Celis, originario de Venezuela y sin estatus legal en Estados Unidos. El tiroteo, que terminó sin consecuencias mortales, se produjo el 14 de enero. En un principio, los funcionarios de la Administración defendieron a Castro frente a las acusaciones. Pero, a diferencia de la postura adoptada en otros casos similares, los empleados federales se fueron apartando públicamente de Castro en las semanas siguientes. Además, se retiraron los cargos penales que se le habían imputado a Sosa-Clis y otro hombre, mientras que suspendieron a Castro de su empleo. Fue entonces cuando sugirieron que las grabaciones de vídeo contradecían aspectos clave de la versión que el agente del ICE había dado a las autoridades.
