U.S. Senate confirms Trumps former lawyer Todd Blanche as attorney general in 50-49 vote
The U.S. Senate confirmed Todd Blanche as attorney general early Saturday, approving President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer to lead the Department of Justice in a 50-49 vote.
Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska joined all Democrats in opposition, leaving the narrowest possible majority for Blanche, who had served as acting attorney general since April. Trump fired his previous attorney general, Pam Bondi, amid criticism of her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case.
Blanche, a loyal Trump ally, previously represented the president in criminal trials, including the New York case involving hush money payments to a porn star. Democrats condemned the nomination, with Sen. Dick Durbin, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, stating on Tuesday, “The attorney general is supposed to be the people’s lawyer. Mr. Blanche continues to operate as the president’s personal lawyer, treating the Justice Department like a law firm serving one client – the president.”
The confirmation followed weeks of dispute over two controversial proposals: a $1.8 billion fund for what Trump called victims of politicized prosecutions, potentially including Jan. 6 Capitol rioters, and a plan to grant Trump immunity from tax audits. Blanche secured key Republican support by scrapping the fund in writing and limiting the audit immunity to past tax years, not future filings.
Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., announced his support for Blanche on Friday, calling him perhaps the most qualified candidate to lead the department under Trump. Cassidy’s vote proved decisive after initial Republican holdouts, including Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, also backed Blanche following his concessions.
Trump has praised Blanche as a “star” and sought to bring nominally independent agencies under closer White House control. Blanche, in a post on X after the vote, said he was “deeply honored by the trust and confidence President Trump has placed in me to lead the Department of Justice” and thanked the Senate for completing the process.
