Tiger Woods to change plea in Florida DUI case after rollover crash
Tiger Woods is set to change his plea in a Florida court on Wednesday morning, five months after his arrest on charges of driving under the influence following a rollover crash in Martin County.
Court records show the change of plea hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at the Martin County Courthouse, about 40 miles north of West Palm Beach. Woods, 50, had previously pleaded not guilty in March to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and refusal to submit to testing, along with a traffic violation for careless driving. The golf champion was arrested after his Land Rover clipped a truck and rolled over on a residential street, forcing him to crawl out through the passenger door. No one was injured in the crash.
According to an arrest affidavit, Woods denied drinking alcohol but told deputies he had taken “a few” prescription medications earlier that day. He passed a breathalyzer test but declined a urinalysis screening for other drugs. Officers found two hydrocodone pills, a prescription opioid, in his pocket. Body camera footage released in April showed Woods kneeling on one knee after the crash, telling officers, “I looked down at my phone, and all of a sudden, boom.”
Woods wrote on social media following the incident that he was stepping away to seek treatment and focus on his health. The March crash was his second arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.
It remains unclear how Woods will change his plea or whether he has reached a deal with prosecutors. His attorney declined to comment when contacted by CNN on Tuesday. Prosecutors and Woods’ legal team have not disclosed further details.
The case stems from an incident in which Woods’ vehicle crossed double solid lines, struck a trailer, and flipped onto its driver’s side. The other driver assisted Woods in climbing out of the overturned vehicle. Deputies noted multiple errors during field sobriety exercises, and Woods was charged shortly afterward.
