WHO says Congo Ebola outbreak began months before declaration as cases surge
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the deadliest in the country’s history, with 2,325 deaths reported as of Sunday, according to the national health institute. The current outbreak has now surpassed the 2018–2020 epidemic, which claimed 2,299 lives, and is the second-deadliest globally after the West African outbreak of 2014–2016.
Confirmed infections have risen to 4,945, with 101 new cases recorded in the past 24 hours alone. The mortality rate among confirmed cases has climbed from 20% in early June to 46%, though experts attribute this to persistent gaps in surveillance and access to medical care rather than increased viral lethality. Thomas Parisch of Doctors Without Borders noted that many cases are only identified post-mortem, and weak infrastructure and community resistance continue to hinder containment efforts .
The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, began circulating as early as January but was officially confirmed in mid-May. No licensed vaccines or treatments exist for this strain. While the virus briefly spread to neighboring Uganda, authorities there declared the outbreak contained last month after limiting cases to 20 and deaths to two.
Meanwhile, in Ireland, five teenagers died and four others were seriously injured in a head-on collision on a motorway near Dublin early Sunday. Police reported the car carrying the teenagers had been driving in the wrong direction .
In Spain, a shooting in Isla Cristina, Huelva, left three people dead, including a minor. Authorities said two masked individuals on a motorcycle opened fire before fleeing the scene .
