Germany has asked Washington to expedite deliveries of long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles and ground-based Typhon launchers. However, Raytheon, part of RTX Corp., is unlikely to fulfill Germanys order within the next five years because of a missile shortage, according to Bloomberg. Eastern European countries using US weapons systems also faced delivery delays shortly after the US-Israel war with Iran began, two officials told the agency. The depletion of US stockpiles is also complicating Ukraines efforts to secure additional Patriot interceptor missiles ahead of an anticipated harsh winter. Air defense supplies to Ukraine are expected to be a key topic at UN meetings in New York next week. Donald Trump said this week that he is discussing with Kyiv the possibility of transferring a much less advanced version of the Patriot system or allowing European countries to manufacture the missiles under license. According to Bloomberg, the US used more than half of its most advanced Patriot missiles, a third of its Tomahawk inventory, and nearly half of its precision-guided missiles and THAAD interceptors during the war with Iran. The US Congressional Budget Office estimated that by June 2025, the US military could have exhausted up to two-thirds of its interceptor missile stockpiles. The Pentagon has acknowledged that ammunition use during the initial months of the war led to a depletion of strategic stockpiles and exposed industrial base vulnerabilities hindering the replenishment of ammunition reserves. Washington is now building up stocks of critical components and specific types of munitions while working to shorten production timelines, according to a report released this week. Defense companies are also increasing production. Lockheed Martin is working to raise annual production capacity for PAC-3 MSE missiles used in the Patriot system from about 600 to 2,000 units. The supply problems extend beyond Europe. In April, the US warned Japan of delays of up to two years in Tomahawk missile deliveries. Saudi Arabia has also asked allies, particularly the US, for military assistance to counter Houthi attacks from Yemen. Washington has not indicated whether it will provide additional support. Meanwhile, Bloomberg sources say the US continues to transfer weapons to Ukraine purchased by European allies through NATO and EU initiatives. Next week, European leaders plan to again ask Trump to provide Kyiv with more Patriot missiles. EU officials also hope to secure Washingtons approval for production in Europe, with the option of transferring the missiles to Ukraine.
