Zelensky establishes annual Day of Unmanned Systems Forces as drones reshape war
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday signed a decree establishing 11 June as the annual Day of the Unmanned Systems Forces, marking the first anniversary of a military branch that has reshaped the battlefield and destroyed nearly $40 billion worth of Russian targets in a single year .
Speaking to commanders on Tuesday, Zelensky said the Unmanned Systems Forces (USF) had “changed the war,” enabling precision strikes deep behind Russian lines that are now forcing Moscow to ration ammunition and contemplate abandoning key positions such as the Kinburn peninsula . Ukrainian long-range strikes have severed supply routes to Crimea, triggering fuel shortages, panic buying and mass cancellations of tourist bookings on the peninsula .
The USF’s impact was underscored on Monday when Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi told Zelensky that the force’s long-range campaign was “implemented precisely as intended,” cutting off Russian logistics in southern Ukraine . Analysts note that Moscow has begun rationing artillery shells, a direct consequence of sustained Ukrainian drone and missile attacks on depots and rail hubs .
Zelensky will travel to the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains on Tuesday to press Western allies for continued financial and military support amid signs of war-weariness in some capitals . French President Emmanuel Macron said the gathering was vital to “restore convergence” among G7 members, including on the need for eventual negotiations .
Meanwhile, Russian drone and missile strikes on Kharkiv Oblast on 8–9 June killed seven people and wounded 44, regional officials said, underscoring the continued human cost of Moscow’s aerial campaign . The strikes came as Ukraine’s energy system faces renewed pressure, with authorities warning of inevitable blackouts this summer following months of Russian attacks on power infrastructure .
