Roberto Mancini will return for a second spell as the head coach of Italy's national football team, Italian Football Federation (FIGC) President Giovanni Malago announced on Tuesday. Claudio Ranieri will take over as technical director.
Mancini replaces Gennaro Gattuso, who left the post in April following a World Cup qualifying defeat by Bosnia and Herzegovina, the third time in a row the four-time world champions had failed to reach the global showpiece event. Mancini previously led Italy to the European Championship title in 2021 and has managed clubs such as Inter Milan, Fiorentina, and Manchester City, where he guided them to their first Premier League title in the 2011-12 season.
The appointment comes after a period of turmoil for the FIGC. Former FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini and adviser Leonardo resigned from their roles on Monday after their primary candidate for the Italy coach’s position, Andrea Pirlo, had his appointment blocked due to his ties to a Russian betting firm. Former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who was the FIGC’s first choice to take charge of the national team, turned down the job this month.
Ranieri, who famously led Leicester City to a shock English Premier League title in 2016, will oversee technical operations and elite football development across Italy’s national team structures. Malago stated that he needed someone with whom he could share the decision on the coach, and that without that shared view, his reasoning would have carried little weight.
Mancini's return is aimed at revitalizing the Squadra Azzurra, who have missed out on the last three World Cups. The 61-year-old coach has a wealth of experience, having led Italy in 58 matches during his first spell and achieving significant success at both club and international levels.
The announcement was made during a Federal Council meeting, and Malago confirmed the decision at a press conference. Mancini's appointment comes amid turmoil after Andrea Pirlo's expected appointment collapsed due to his ties to a Russian betting firm.
