Cypruss EDEK elects 27-year-old Sofia Christodoulou Makri as first woman leader
Sofia Christodoulou Makri was elected the new leader of Cyprus’s EDEK party on Saturday, securing 53.5% of the vote in the leadership contest. Official results showed she received 1,191 votes, while Koullis Mavronikolas finished second with 788 votes, or 35.4%, and Giorgos Kouttoukis garnered 246 votes .
Christodoulou Makri, 27, becomes the first woman and the youngest leader in the party’s history since its founding in 1969. The election was marked by internal tension and allegations of voter disenfranchisement, according to unofficial results from the party’s polling stations .
