Tourist plane crashes near Perus Nazca Lines, killing all on board: authorities confirm no survivors
A small tourist plane crashed Saturday near Peru’s Nazca Lines, killing all 13 people on board, authorities and local media reported.
The Cessna Caravan C-208, operated by Peruvian airline Aerodiana, took off at around 12:10 p.m. local time from Pisco airport for a sightseeing flight over the UNESCO World Heritage site. At approximately 1 p.m., the crew reported an emergency to the Nazca airfield control tower before radio contact was lost, according to Peru’s Ministry of Transport and Communications .
The victims included 11 tourists—seven Italians, two Germans, and two Spaniards—and two Peruvian crew members, the ministry and local reports confirmed. Police Major Jorge Andrade told reporters at the scene that there were no survivors, with four bodies recovered so far . The Spanish victims were identified as Alfredo Avilés Muñoyerro and his wife, Ana Isabel Sánchez Muñoz, both 52, from Arroyo de la Encomienda, Valladolid . The Italian victims included two families from Monza and Seregno: Paolo Gianturco, his wife Cristina, and their sons Matteo and Pietro, as well as Massimo Angelucci, his wife Elena, and their son Lorenzo .
The aircraft crashed near the town of Socos, in the district of Pueblo Nuevo, and burst into flames, making rescue impossible, according to Peruvian broadcaster RPP . Firefighters and police were seen working amid the smoldering wreckage, with one wheel of the plane detached from the debris .
Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori expressed deep regret over the accident and said authorities were considering the temporary closure of Pisco airport, from which the plane had departed . The Ministry of Transport and Communications, along with Peru’s civil aviation authority and air accident agency, have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash .
Sightseeing flights over the Nazca Lines had been temporarily suspended the day before due to strong winds exceeding 40 kilometers per hour, forcing several aircraft to divert to other airports . The Nazca Lines, a collection of ancient geoglyphs depicting animals, plants, and geometric shapes, are best viewed from the air and attract numerous tourists .

Entre los fallecidos están los dos tripulantes de la aeronave, de nacionalidad peruana, además de siete italianos integrantes de dos familias y sendas parejas de españoles y alemanes, según la información preliminar reportada por las autoridades peruanas. El accidente se produjo en torno a las 13:00 hora local a dos kilómetros aproximadamente del aeropuerto de Nazca, después de que la avioneta, de la compañía Aerodiana, hubiese despegado en torno al mediodía del aeropuerto de Pisco, en la región de Ica, con el objetivo de sobrevolar los geoglifos de las Líneas de Nazca. En un comunicado, el Ministerio de Transportes y Comunicaciones ha explicado que, cuando la nave, una Cessna Gran Caravan C-208 con capacidad para 12 pasajeros, sobrevolaba las cercanías de la localidad de Socos, en el distrito de Pueblo Nuevo, la tripulación reportó una situación de emergencia a la torre de control del aeródromo de Nazca, tras lo cual se perdió todo contacto radial. Ha añadido que, de inmediato, el personal de la Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil, los bomberos aeronáuticos y la Policía Nacional se movilizaron a la zona y confirmaron que no se registraron supervivientes. La Dirección General y la Comisión de Investigación de Accidentes de Aviación han activado de forma automática los protocolos y procedimientos técnicos para esclarecer las causas del accidente. La presidenta de Perú, Keiko Fujimori, ha dicho a los periodistas que lamenta profundamente el accidente. El ministro de Transportes y Comunicaciones está realizando la investigación correspondiente y el canciller está comunicando a los consulados de los ciudadanos extranjeros que han perdido la vida. Asimismo, la jefa de Estado ha añadido que se está evaluando la clausura temporal del aeropuerto del que partió la avioneta de la empresa Aerodiana. Por su parte, la Fiscalía ha indicado que el fiscal provincial Hugo Umiña se trasladó de inmediato a la zona y dispuso el levantamiento de los cuerpos. En coordinación con el equipo del Instituto de Medicina Legal, se efectuará el traslado de los restos a la morgue para su identificación y posterior entrega a sus familiares. En tanto, la compañía Aerodiana expresó su profundo pesar por el accidente y extendió sus condolencias y solidaridad a los familiares de los fallecidos, además de acompañar su dolor con respeto y absoluta disposición para brindar el apoyo que corresponda. Este accidente ocurre un día después de que la región Ica sufriera un incremento de velocidad de los famosos vientos Paracas a una intensidad moderada, que fue medida por el Servicio Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrología (Senamhi) en 50 kilómetros por hora en la ciudad de Pisco.
