Houthi missile and drone strikes kill dozens of Yemeni government troops in Hadramout and Marib
At least 30 Yemeni government troops were killed and 15 injured in missile and drone attacks by the Iran-backed Houthi militia on military camps in Hadramout and Marib provinces on Thursday, government and medical sources said. Other reports placed the death toll at 38, with 29 additional injuries, describing the strikes as the deadliest since 2022 .
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed the attacks, using ballistic missiles and drones, killed or wounded “hundreds” of fighters allied with Saudi Arabia and destroyed military bases and weapons depots . Yemeni military sources said eight missiles were fired from al-Jawf governorate, targeting al-Thiniya and al-Abr in Hadramout and al-Rouk in Marib, with one strike hitting troops during morning formation .
The Yemeni government, backed by Saudi Arabia, confirmed the attacks but framed them as a response to prior strikes on Houthi positions. The Houthis stated the assaults followed “military build-ups” by Saudi-backed forces aimed at escalating the conflict . Videos circulating on social media purported to show the attacks in desert areas of the oil-rich provinces, which have been contested since Yemen’s civil war began over a decade ago .
Tensions have risen in recent weeks after a four-year relative calm. On July 13, the Yemeni government said it struck Sanaa airport to prevent an Iranian plane from landing. The Houthis retaliated by attacking Saudi Arabia’s Abha airport, which Riyadh said it intercepted. On July 20, the Houthis announced a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia and began targeting Saudi-linked ships in the Red Sea .
Yemeni forces loyal to the internationally recognized government also intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone over Marib on Thursday morning, according to the official SABA news agency . The Houthis have escalated attacks on Saudi-linked vessels, energy facilities, and airports in recent days, with Saudi Arabia reportedly evaluating diplomatic or military responses .
