The U.S. government accused Microsoft of abusing the H-1B visa program, which allows skilled foreign workers to immigrate to the United States, after the company laid off 6,000 American employees while hiring 6,300 foreign workers under the program.

Vice President JD Vance made the allegation to journalists in Washington on Thursday, stating that Microsoft had simultaneously reduced its domestic workforce and benefited from a large influx of H-1B visa holders. The figures cited by Vance indicate the company replaced nearly all of its laid-off U.S. staff with foreign hires through the program.
