A ballistic missile strike on a Kyiv railway depot and other facilities killed seven people, including six Ukrainian Railways employees, according to Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, the company’s chief executive. “The ballistic strike took the lives of seven people, six of whom were our employees. Kyiv’s regional military administration reported additional casualties, including three deaths in the capital and eight wounded in a residential building strike in Boryspil. Tymur Tkachenko, the administration’s chief, said the region faced a “massive attack by Russian missiles and strike drones” overnight .
Russia’s defense ministry claimed its forces targeted military and energy sites in Kyiv and Odesa, though Ukrainian officials reported civilian casualties, including women and children. The attacks coincided with the start of the school year in Ukraine, where officials warned against large gatherings in high-risk areas. A plant near Kyiv producing 1.3 million textbooks—nearly 10% of the national supply—was destroyed earlier this week, delaying deliveries, the education ministry said .
Ukraine launched its own strikes, with Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reporting more than a dozen drones shot down near the Russian capital. In Leningrad Oblast, Governor Alexander Drozdenko said Ukrainian drones damaged the Ust-Luga port, a key oil export hub, with 38 drones intercepted over the region .
NATO’s Baltic air policing mission scrambled fighter jets in response to the attacks, while Finland and Latvia restricted air and maritime traffic near Russian borders. Romania’s Orlivka border crossing with Ukraine was temporarily closed after a Russian Shahed drone strike .
Ukraine’s air force warned of ongoing ballistic missile threats, urging residents to remain in shelters. The strikes followed a weekend attack on an ammunition depot near Kyiv that killed 38 people .
