Leeds United demolished Newcastle United 4-1 in the Premier League at Elland Road on Monday, climbing to third in the table and handing Magpies boss Matthias Jaissle his first defeat.
An own goal by Newcastle’s Lewis Miley opened the scoring after Ao Tanaka’s strike deflected twice before looping in. Jayden Bogle doubled Leeds’ lead two minutes later when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header flicked off him into the net. Calvert-Lewin then bulldozed past Sven Botman to score Leeds’ third, his fifth consecutive league goal at Elland Road. Noah Okafor made it 4-0 before the hour mark, volleying in from the edge of the box after Newcastle failed to clear a long throw. Bazoumana Toure netted a consolation in stoppage time.
Newcastle’s night worsened early when Nico Gonzalez was substituted as a concussion replacement, leaving 18-year-old Sean Steur and Miley, 20, exposed in midfield. The visitors, already adjusting to life without departed stars Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, struggled to regain composure against a dominant Leeds side.
The win gives Daniel Farke’s team eight points from four games, trailing only Arsenal and Manchester City. Newcastle remain on five points but drop to 12th due to their negative goal difference .
A live report from The Guardian noted Leeds’ control from the start, with Toure’s late goal sealing the rout after a miskick from Ethan Ampadu allowed Livramento to set him up .
