At least 12 people have died and 54 others have been injured as wildfires swept through northeastern Algeria on Wednesday, Interior Minister Said Sayoud said. The deaths occurred in Jijel, Bejaia and Tizi Ouzou provinces, with five fatalities in Jijel, four in Bejaia and three in Tizi Ouzou, according to Sayoud .

Civil protection authorities reported 154 wildfires across Algeria on Wednesday, with 69 still active by 8:00 p.m. local time. Six of the injured were in critical condition and receiving intensive care, while footage showed residents taking refuge in a post office as smoke engulfed the area . Three major highways in eastern Algeria were closed due to fires near Bejaia, Jijel and Setif, the gendarmerie said .

Sayoud and Health Minister Mohamed Seddik Ait Messaoudene traveled to Bejaia to assess firefighting operations and the condition of the injured, the official APS news agency reported . Local media identified an 8-year-old boy and a 22-year-old woman among the dead in Bejaia .

The fires come as North Africa faces a severe heatwave, with Algeria and Tunisia particularly affected. The World Meteorological Organization noted that extreme heat has become common in the region, which has experienced the most rapid warming in Africa at 0.43°C per decade between 1991 and 2025 .

In Croatia, fires have burned 9,600 hectares by mid-August, below the record levels of 2017 and 2022, according to Croatian Forests. The European Forest Fire Information System reported that over 1 million hectares burned in the EU in 2025, with 506,000 hectares already affected by early August 2026—a third more than the same period last year .

Croatian firefighters received six new specialized vehicles for forest fire suppression on Wednesday, with a handover ceremony held at the State Firefighting School in Zagreb . Authorities noted that fires often occur on overgrown private land, complicating response efforts .
