President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States had reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland granting Washington “permanent control over security” on the island, including the authority to block adversaries from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments there.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the deal addresses “ALL of our many U.S. concerns” and comes “at NO COST to the United States.” He added that the U.S. would immediately begin developing a “large military presence” in Greenland and that the agreement has “no end date” .
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen confirmed the agreement, stating it would be signed next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. She described it as beneficial for NATO and Europe, emphasizing that it “recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom, as well as the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination” .
Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the pact strengthens security for Greenland, Denmark, the U.S., and the Atlantic Alliance, while acknowledging Greenland’s interests in international cooperation .
A U.S. State Department official said the agreement ensures China and Russia cannot establish bases or deploy troops in Greenland, with mechanisms in place to prevent sensitive investments . The deal follows months of tensions, including Trump’s repeated calls for U.S. control over the strategically vital Arctic territory.
