The Democratic Republic of Congo has begun vaccinating front-line health workers against Ebola using the Ervebo vaccine, though its effectiveness against the current Bundibugyo strain remains unproven. The first injections were administered in Kisangani, with over 50,000 doses already received, according to Congolese Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba. An additional 70,000 doses have been approved by the World Health Organization, with 20,000 allocated for clinical trials to test efficacy against the new strain .
As of Tuesday, the DRC reported 5,713 confirmed Ebola cases, including 2,744 deaths, making this the deadliest outbreak in the country’s history. The WHO has stated the outbreak remains out of control and is concentrated in Ituri province, which borders Uganda. Health workers have called for more vaccine doses amid worsening conditions, including insecurity, displacement, and a health workers’ strike .
The outbreak’s rapid spread has outpaced previous epidemics, with 1,000 infections reached in 40 days compared to 235 days during the 2018 outbreak. The mortality rate stands at 47%, seven times higher than the 2014–2016 West Africa outbreak, which killed over 11,000 people. The U.S. has contributed over $500 million to containment efforts and imposed a 21-day travel restriction on individuals, including Americans, who have been in the DRC .
Kamba said the vaccination campaign would expand in a ring strategy, covering provinces surrounding Ituri and moving toward the outbreak’s center. The WHO confirmed last week that 70,000 Ervebo doses were approved for use in the DRC, though no vaccine or treatment is currently licensed for the Bundibugyo strain .
