Qantas test flight on modified Airbus A350-1000ULR sets stage for 2027 nonstop Sydney-London route

An Airbus A350-1000ULR completed a test flight from Melbourne to Toulouse on Tuesday, lasting 24 hours and 24 minutes. The flight covered 23,076 kilometers and was tracked by over 3.6 million people on Flightradar24, making it the second most-watched flight on the platform after the 2024 flight carrying the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II.
The aircraft took off from Melbourne on July 27 and landed in Toulouse on July 28. The flight path stretched across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and North America. The A350-1000ULR is equipped with an additional rear center fuel tank capable of carrying 20,900 liters of fuel, extending its range by 1,000 nautical miles.
The test flight is part of Qantas's Project Sunrise, which aims to offer nonstop flights from Sydney to London and New York starting in 2027. Qantas has ordered 12 of these modified aircraft, with the first expected to be delivered in April 2027. The aircraft can carry 238 passengers and has a fuel capacity of 20,000 liters.
The return flight from Melbourne to Toulouse simulated the trajectory the plane would take once in commercial service. On board were a cockpit crew of eight from Airbus's testing division, accompanied by two Qantas pilots and two Airbus engineers. The flight tested the modified architecture around the extra fuel tank, changes to make the cabin quieter, and the plane's air circulation system.
Qantas plans to start nonstop flights between London and Sydney from October 2027, with plans to add a Sydney to New York route later. The airline's Project Sunrise has been in development for nine years.
Currently, the longest commercial flight is operated by Singapore Airlines between Singapore and New York, covering 15,350 kilometers in over 18 hours. In 2005, a Boeing 777-200LR Worldliner flew 21,601.7 kilometers from Hong Kong to London in 22 hours and 42 minutes.
