President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday that he secretly switched aircraft in Turkey last month after a NATO summit, following what he described as a security directive from the Secret Service and the military.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said he complied with their instructions to board a different plane. “I go by Secret Service and the military. They wanted me to go on a different flight, a different plane,” he said. “I guess there was a threat out there. I didn’t really ask too much about it. I get a lot of threats.”
The operation, first reported by the Washington Post on Monday, involved Trump boarding Air Force One in Ankara on July 8 in full view of cameras, then discreetly exiting the aircraft and transferring to a smaller U.S. military C-32A via a catering truck. The decoy Air Force One later flew to Britain with journalists and aides aboard, unaware of the switch. Trump then traveled separately before rejoining the presidential aircraft in the U.K.
Trump downplayed the risk to those left on the original plane, stating, “I do what they say.” He added that the aircraft he ultimately used may have been at greater risk, as it would have been a more likely target. “Actually, I think the plane I was on was more at risk,” he said.
The White House had initially maintained that Trump traveled aboard Air Force One for the entire journey. The Post’s report cited an Iranian assassination threat as the catalyst for the covert operation. Trump, when asked about Iran, said, “They lie to me all the time,” and asserted U.S. control over the Strait of Hormuz. “Right now, we have total control of the Strait of Hormuz. They don’t. It’s ours,” he said.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for a full briefing on the operation, according to the Financial Times, demanding an account of the measures taken to protect the president from the alleged threat .
The Secret Service, responsible for presidential security, has not publicly commented on the specifics of the operation. Trump reiterated that his actions were guided by their directives. “It’s up to the Secret Service,” he said.
