American actress Hayden Panettiere, star of Heroes and Nashville, dies at 36

Hayden Panettiere, the American actress best known for her roles in the television series *Heroes* and *Nashville*, has died at the age of 36. Her death was confirmed on Sunday by a representative to ABC News, with her father, Skip Panettiere, releasing a statement describing her as “an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.” The family requested privacy as they “take time to process this unimaginable loss,” and no cause of death has been announced .
Born in Palisades, New York, in 1989, Panettiere began her career as a child actor, appearing in commercials before her first birthday and later in soap operas such as *One Life to Live* and *Guiding Light*. She gained early recognition for her role in the 2000 sports drama *Remember the Titans* alongside Denzel Washington and as the voice of Dot in Pixar’s 1998 film *A Bug’s Life* .
Her breakthrough came in 2006 when she was cast as cheerleader Claire Bennet in NBC’s *Heroes*, a role that made her an international star. She later played country singer Juliette Barnes in *Nashville* from 2012 to 2018, earning two Golden Globe nominations for best supporting actress. Her singing on the show produced 11 entries on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs charts .
Panettiere also appeared in films including *Bring It On: All or Nothing*, *Raising Helen*, and *Scream 4*, reprising her role as Kirby Reed in *Scream VI* in 2023. She was previously in a relationship with Ukrainian former world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, with whom she had a daughter, Kaya, in 2014. The couple separated in 2018 .
Earlier this year, Panettiere published a memoir, *This Is Me: A Reckoning*, in which she discussed her struggles with addiction, mental health, and the loss of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023 at the age of 28. She also addressed her decision to grant full custody of her daughter to Klitschko in 2018, stating in a May interview with podcaster Jay Shetty that the idea she had “just given away” her child was “heartbreaking and couldn’t be further from the truth” .
Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding her death, and investigations are ongoing. Panettiere is survived by her daughter and her parents .
