Finland and Sweden conducted their first joint fighter jet interception of Russian military aircraft over the Gulf of Finland on Thursday, according to statements from the Finnish Air Force on Friday.
Finnish F/A-18 Hornets and Swedish JAS 39 Gripen jets, operating under Quick Reaction Alert protocols, identified a Russian formation including a Tu-134 transport aircraft, MiG-31 fighter jets, and Su-30 jets in international airspace. The mission was led by Finland’s Air Operations Center as part of deepened bilateral cooperation to monitor and protect regional airspace.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said on X that the operation demonstrated the readiness and trust built between the two nations. “The Baltic Sea has never been as vulnerable as it is today, but it has also never been as well protected as it is now,” he wrote .
The operation follows heightened tensions in the Baltic region since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which prompted Finland and Sweden to abandon decades of military non-alignment and join NATO in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Finnish Air Force Colonel Vesa Mäntylä said the mission exemplified the strengthened cooperation, enabling joint operational flights and mutual support from each other’s airbases .
