Estonia’s parliament elected Ülle Madise as the country’s next president on Wednesday in a secret ballot, making her the second woman to hold the largely ceremonial but influential office.
Madise, 51, secured 71 votes in the 101-seat Riigikogu, surpassing the required two-thirds majority of 68. Seventy-eight lawmakers participated, with seven submitting blank ballots. She will be sworn in on Oct. 12, succeeding Alar Karis, who chose not to seek a second term .
A constitutional lawyer and Estonia’s chancellor of justice since 2015, Madise ran unopposed after months of cross-party negotiations. Addressing lawmakers after the vote, she said, “I will do my best to be worthy of this trust. I hope that through mutual understanding, debating vigorously when necessary while still supporting one another, we can accomplish a great deal together for Estonia, so that life in Estonia is happy, good and safe” .
Karis congratulated Madise on social media, writing, “Serving as head of state is a great honour and an even greater responsibility. I wish you strength, wisdom and resolve” . Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs also offered early congratulations, calling Estonia and Latvia “close allies, friends and partners” .
