Amazon founder Bezos joins consortium buying minority stake in Liverpool FC
Amazon founder Bezos consortium nears one-third stake in Liverpool FC at 4.4bn valuation
Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, agreed on Friday to sell a minority stake in the Premier League club to a consortium that includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The deal values the stake at approximately £1.65 billion, according to The Times, implying a total club valuation of £5.5 billion .
The consortium, 1892 Holdings, is led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, and includes Bezos’ K5 Sports Fund as well as Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, Reuters reported . The stake acquired is estimated at 30-33% of the club, with Fenway Sports Group retaining majority ownership and operational control .
FSG President Mike Gordon stated that the decision aligns with the club’s long-term interests, saying, “The FC Liverpool is always a club that looks beyond a season and makes decisions with the long-term interests of the club in mind” . The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions, according to Liverpool’s official statement .
Bezos will not hold a direct seat on Liverpool’s board nor take an operational role, entering the investment through K5 Sports, a fund tied to his K5 Global venture, as reported by Expansion and Reuters . The consortium’s involvement follows weeks of negotiations, with the deal structured to avoid Bezos serving as its public face .
FSG, which acquired Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million, will use the proceeds to bolster the club’s competitiveness, according to Japan Today . The club last won the Premier League in 2025.
