Ukraine’s former ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, was charged with illicit enrichment by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) on Aug. 5, 2026, two days after her resignation. Prosecutors allege she concealed two apartments, cash, and the use of a Mercedes, with assets valued at approximately $310,000 that exceeded her declared income as a public official .
Stefanishyna, 40, appeared in Ukraine’s High Anti-Corruption Court on Aug. 5, where prosecutors sought bail of UAH 13 million (around $300,000). She was released on a $135,000 bond and denied wrongdoing, calling the case “a storm in a glass of water” in a statement accompanied by a photo from the courtroom .
President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Stefanishyna on Aug. 3 after she submitted her resignation, amid a broader shake-up in Ukraine’s leadership that included the recent replacement of the prime minister and defense minister. Investigative outlet Hromadske reported in July that Stefanishyna’s mother purchased a three-bedroom apartment in Kyiv’s Lvivska Ploshcha complex in autumn 2022 for UAH 3.04 million ($83,000), while comparable units sold for around UAH 12 million ($300,000). Stefanishyna told Bihus.Info the purchase was agreed in 2019 and financed through a long-term installment plan .
The case follows other high-profile corruption allegations within Zelensky’s circle this year. Former deputy prime minister Oleksiy Chernyshov was charged with illicit enrichment and placed in pre-trial detention, while businessman Tymur Mindich, once a close associate of Zelensky, is accused of siphoning off $100 million from state utility Energoatom. Mindich fled the country hours before officials raided a second undeclared apartment where large amounts of cash and a solid gold toilet were found .
Stefanishyna previously served as justice minister for much of the period in question, from early 2024 to summer 2025, before her appointment as ambassador to the U.S. one year ago .
