German teenager Johannes Liebmann shattered the world record in the men’s 1,500-meter freestyle at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris, clocking a time nearly four seconds faster than the previous mark. The 19-year-old won gold in the event, his second title of the meet after earlier triumphing in the 800-meter freestyle .

Liebmann’s performance headlined a day of record-breaking swims. France’s Léon Marchand secured his first European title by winning the 200-meter butterfly final in front of a home crowd in Paris . Mary-Ambre Moluh also set a new European record for France, taking gold in the women’s 100-meter backstroke.

Meanwhile, at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, Amy Hunt of Great Britain claimed her third gold medal of the week, winning the 200-meter sprint to add to her earlier 100-meter title. Hunt, a Cambridge University graduate, has emerged as the standout performer of the championships, with her sights set on a historic quadruple . Dina Asher-Smith, the 2018 European sprint treble winner and British record holder in both the 100m and 200m, finished behind Hunt in the 200m final.

Sweden’s Andreas Almgren delivered a dominant performance in Birmingham, winning the men’s 10,000 meters and breaking a 48-year-old European Championships record . In the 1,500 meters, Dutch runner Stefan Nillessen pulled off a surprise victory, out-sprinting the field to claim gold. “I don’t even know what I’m doing here, but I feel fantastic,” Nillessen said after the race .

Germany’s Julian Weber won the men’s javelin throw with a championship-record 90.40 meters, edging out teammate Nick Thumm, who took silver . In the women’s high jump, Poland’s Maria Zodzik and Montenegro’s Marija Vukovic both cleared 1.95 meters, with Zodzik claiming silver and Vukovic bronze based on fewer attempts .

The championships conclude Sunday with the men’s and women’s marathons, along with finals in the pole vault, javelin, long jump, mixed 4x100-meter relay, and 3,000-meter steeplechase .
