Partial lunar eclipse to peak at dawn in Prague as Europe sees mixed late-summer weather

A partial lunar eclipse will be visible from Prague at dawn on Friday, August 28, with the Moon passing almost entirely into Earth’s shadow shortly before it sets. The eclipse will reach its maximum at 6:12 a.m. CEST, leaving only a narrow illuminated section along the Moon’s northern edge, according to astronomers at the Silesian University in Opava. The Moon is expected to set at approximately 6:17 a.m., providing a brief window to observe the peak. The partial phase will begin at 4:33 a.m., with Earth’s shadow gradually covering the lunar surface until only a thin crescent remains visible. Observers will need an unobstructed view toward the southwest, as the Moon will be low above the horizon during the event’s most critical phase .
The eclipse follows another major astronomical event visible from the Czech Republic earlier in August, offering skywatchers a second opportunity to witness a rare celestial phenomenon in a short period. Unlike solar eclipses, no protective eyewear is required to observe the lunar eclipse.
Meanwhile, weather conditions across Europe vary. In Sweden, meteorologist Catarina Wahlström forecasted sunny days with temperatures reaching up to 25 degrees Celsius in many areas as summer nears its end . In Germany, the German Weather Service (DWD) reported a mix of showers and localized thunderstorms in Baden-Württemberg on Tuesday, with temperatures ranging from 19 degrees in the Black Forest to 25 degrees near the Oberrhein. Warmer conditions are expected to return by Thursday, with temperatures potentially reaching 32 degrees in the Kurpfalz region .
In Spain, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) predicted a more stable weather pattern on Tuesday, though storms and heavy rain were still expected in Galicia and Asturias. Temperatures were set to rise in Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, and Mediterranean coastal areas, with some regions exceeding 35 degrees Celsius . In Greece, the National Meteorological Service reported temperatures reaching up to 39 degrees Celsius in mainland areas, with strong meltemi winds in the Aegean Sea .
Cyprus experienced mostly clear skies on Tuesday, with isolated mountain showers possible in the afternoon. Temperatures inland were expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius, while coastal areas remained slightly cooler . In the Netherlands, summer temperatures and clear skies were forecasted for Tuesday and Wednesday, with a chance of rain in the south on Wednesday morning .
