Eva Marie Saint, the Oscar-winning actress known for her roles in *On the Waterfront* and *North by Northwest*, died on Oct. 6 at her home in Los Angeles. She was 102. Her spokesperson, Jeff Sanderson, confirmed she passed away of natural causes with her family by her side .
Saint won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her debut film role in *On the Waterfront* (1954), directed by Elia Kazan, where she starred opposite Marlon Brando. The film swept the Oscars that year, earning eight trophies, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Brando .
She later gained fame for her performance as Eve Kendall in Alfred Hitchcock’s *North by Northwest* (1959), co-starring Cary Grant. Over her decades-long career, she worked with Hollywood legends such as Paul Newman, Gregory Peck, Montgomery Clift, and Burt Lancaster. Saint continued acting into her later years, appearing in Wim Wenders’ *Don’t Come Knocking* (2005), *Superman Returns* (2006), and *Winter’s Tale* (2014) .
Born in 1924, Saint began her career in theater and television before transitioning to film. She married director and producer Jeffrey Hayden in 1951; the couple had two children and remained together until his death in 2016. Saint also won an Emmy for her role in the 1990 miniseries *People Like Us* and received five Emmy nominations throughout her career .
