Novak Djokovic suffered a stunning first-round exit at the U.S. Open on Sunday, losing in five sets to Argentina’s Mariano Navone after a grueling 4-hour, 36-minute match at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 39-year-old Serb, seeded fourth, fell 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 1-6 while visibly struggling with physical distress, including repeated vomiting and cramping in humid conditions.
Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, had not lost in the opening round of a major tournament since the 2006 Australian Open, ending a streak of 78 consecutive first-round wins in Grand Slam events. He led early in the first set but faded as the match progressed, requiring medical treatment for his lower back and relying on medications, sprays, and powders to continue. His wife, Jelena, watched from the stands with a concerned expression as their children cheered his rare points.
“It was obvious that it was an awful feeling on the court for me,” Djokovic said afterward . “Vomiting, throwing up — it’s something I’ve been carrying pretty much every match this year.” He described the issue as a recurring health problem exacerbated by heat and humidity, which also affected him during a first-round loss in Cincinnati two weeks prior.
Navone, ranked 49th in the world, called the victory “very meaningful” and acknowledged the challenge of facing “the greatest” on the sport’s biggest stage . The Argentine advances to the second round, where he will play the winner of Matteo Berrettini vs. Stanislas Wawrinka.
Djokovic’s defeat ended his latest bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title, a milestone that would have moved him clear of Margaret Court’s all-time mark. He last won a major three years ago. The Serb had reached at least the semifinals in six of the previous seven Grand Slam tournaments before this year’s U.S. Open.
