British actor Tim Curry, known for Rocky Horror Picture Show, dies at 80 in Los Angeles

Tim Curry, the British actor best known for his role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in *The Rocky Horror Picture Show*, has died at 80, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.
TMZ first reported Curry died Tuesday evening at his home in Los Angeles, citing unnamed sources. His manager later confirmed to Variety that he passed away peacefully at his Toluca Lake residence. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical emergency at his home earlier that evening, and the actor was declared dead at the scene, according to Romanian outlet Adevărul. Police arrived at 11:23 p.m. and found no signs of foul play.
Curry had battled health issues for over a decade following a severe stroke in 2012 that left him partially immobile and reliant on a wheelchair. Despite his condition, he appeared at the 2015 Tony Awards, where he received the Actors Fund Lifetime Achievement Award.
Born in England, Curry began his career in London’s West End before gaining global recognition as the gender-bending scientist in the 1975 cult film *The Rocky Horror Picture Show*, which originated as a stage musical. The movie, initially a box-office disappointment, later became a midnight-screening phenomenon, with fans dressing as characters and performing along to songs like *Time Warp*. Curry reprised a role in the 2016 television remake as the narrator.
His other notable roles included Pennywise the clown in the 1990 television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s *It*, as well as appearances in *Annie*, *Clue*, *The Hunt for Red October*, *Muppet Treasure Island*, *Home Alone 2: Lost in New York*, *Addams Family Reunion*, and *Scary Movie 2*. He was also a prolific voice actor and stage performer, earning three Tony nominations and one Emmy nomination over his five-decade career.
Curry studied literature and drama at the University of Birmingham before transitioning to television and theater. His first major role came in 1968 in the musical *Hair*. In addition to acting, he released multiple albums with his rock band.
No official cause of death has been released.
